While it’s true that motorcyclists have to be extra vigilant, the drivers of other vehicles also have a responsibility to share the road and look out for motorcycles. What would be a minor crash between two cars can be deadly when a motorcycle is involved.
Common Causes of a Motorcycle Accident
The most common cause is another driver who did not check blind spots for the presence of a motorcyclist or misjudged their distance from one. Crashes with a motorcycle at an intersection account for about one-third of all accidents with a motorcyclist per the TxDOT. Other common reasons that motorcycles are hit are:
- Tailgating a motorcycle
- Speeding
- Texting while driving
- Drunk driving
- Running a red light or stop sign
- Right-of-way violations
